My belt is smoking

This car hasnt been driven much lately and I just started driving it cause my other car is a gas hog.

I noticed the AC wasnt blowing right. it would blow cold, then warm. Then when i got to a stop sign I saw smoke coming out from under the hood. The temp gauge was right and i pulled over and popped the hood and saw smoke coming from the belt area.

FYI, this seems to have one belt for everything.

Am i looking a loose belt or a bad pulley? Would the bad pulley be on the A/C unit? If i pull the belt off, will i be able to tell which pulley is bad?

Re: My belt is smoking

some vehicles give a belt diagram for non-a.c. configuration if your car has this you could give it a shot.....
if not you'll probobly have to get a smaller belt to bypass the A.C.

Sounds like something is locked up the best thing you can do is pull the belt off and check the all the pulleys for excessive tension

What kind of car do you have ?

its a 2000 ford focus

i have intention of bypassing the AC. I just think the ac wasnt working cause the belt wasnt turning properly. I hope thats the case.

No A/C? fuck that. i am driving it to save gas but I'll jump back in my truck if it comes to it.

If smoke stops when you turn a/c off then your compressor is locking up.
If you turn the a/c off and compressor clutch stays engaged and tries to turn compressor, then the clutch is sticking and you have to bypass.

Re: My belt is smoking

You can't bypass the a/c on a focus though cuz it's one serpantine belt for everything. If the compressor and pulley are locked up, gotta replace them..... only way around it. If your pully isn't seized though and just the compresssor itself, you can just drive with the a/c off

I just had a 2005 focus yesterday, came in as a no crank no start. Same thing, compressor and pulley were seized solid. Put a new compressor and related parts in and car started right up
