| ScrewFace Racing #521 | FL Track Days Weekend Update What a weekend! After a late start on Saturday morning, Casey and I were off to the track to meet up with Tony and the rest of the control riders who were assisting over the two day event. Entry was smooth with just a signature waiving liability and we were in the track and ready to set up. Tony and his registration table were set up in Garage 16 so we took the space next door in garage 17. Sean, Casey, Tim, Sammy and I all had our bikes there with Tung, Todd and Tony in 16, we were all pumped about the happenings about to take place. The riders meeting went over well and the sessions were divided up letting the Expert/Advanced class run 1st, followed by the Intermediate and then the Novice last in rotation. We brought the Novice riders into a class room and had a secondary meeting with them to go over some of the intricacies of this track as well as what they might expect while here. All of them were eager to listen and get out on the track. We tried to keep the meeting short as to not bore them to tears but give them as much info as possible. A second meeting would be held after the first session and then a final meeting after lunch with some rider movement from class to class based on their skills. Our Saturday Control riders were Sean, Casey, Jeff, Scudman, Rudolpho Rimirez, Me, (and several others) all of which took turns riding in the Novice and Intermediate groups to assure everything went smoothly. The first three sessions took place before lunch all as scheduled and most without any serious incidents. We did had a couple of red flags but the pick-up crew did an amazing job of recovering any damaged bikes and cleaning up so there was very little time lost in any session. The worst of which was when the absolutely hottest girl riding in Novice crashed early in the day breaking her collar bone was out for the weekend. I was able to ride and work with Evelyn in the morning sessions. She is still pretty timid on the track but was developing some great lines and body position as the day went on. JJ raced his CBR around and got more comments on his chrome-looking-paint than anyone else there. Phil was ripping up the track with his Triumph in his spray-on leathers. Nice job all of you!! Lunch time came and we were given a great treat and served by the restaurant Touch from South Beach on Lincoln road. The food was delicious and healthy. The menu consisted of Steak, Chicken, Cesar Salad, Pasta, Fruit and bread. Nice!! Excellent choice Tony!! After lunch, I offered Tony the opportunity to ride so he surrendered the microphone to me and he took to the track. What a power trip that was! Its amazing how when you have a radio and a microphone just how many people come up to talk to you!! Tony got in one session and was so tired from not sleeping the night prior that he tuckered out and relaxed in the pit area. Tim’s cheering section arrived to root him on….his wife, their two young sons and her sister. (WOW! What a looker your wife is!!) Dunlop, Bridgestone, Grafitty Graphics and GMD Computrak were all there with track side assistance. Ducati Miami and Palm Beach Triumph were in attendance and were sponsors of the event as well. The day went over without a hitch and there were no complaints I can recall throughout the day. Tony told me of several comments (and I heard quite a few of my own) where people were complimenting the running of the event and the desire to return when he host another one! Nice job Tony! We celebrated by having dinner at La Careta and drifted off home for a well needed rest. Sunday was a repeat of Saturday with a few additional names and faces showing up. Jeff saved the day with his credit card machine and HondaHugger was there as well with her son to keep the flow going. In the Advanced/Expert group, we ended up with Sean Dwire, Darren Luck, The incredibly fast Skipper, Charlie Mavros, and several others. Sammy finally showed up, too. There was some troop movement between classes as we not only some folks cherry picking the classes they wanted to ride in, there were those who needed to be moved up as they were out riding the others in their group. There were two pretty hard crashes on Sunday as well. One of the girls from Ducati of Miami went down in turn 1. It appears as if was coming in HOT and grabbed a fist full of brakes and the bike low-sided resulting in a ride to the hospital. At the exact same time there was a crash in turn 4 and that riders trip in the ambulance stopped the sessions for 15+ minutes until we could get an ambulance back into service. The other biggie was a tiff had between one of the Advanced guys and one of the Control Riders that got a bit verbally heated but eventually, like everything else, was just more water under the bridge. The summary…… I believe Dave had a rough get-off on Saturday; Tung did a bit of gravel digging in turn 6, Sean had some Computer code issues which were rectified before Sunday morning, a novice rider took Scudman down in turn 3 while doing lead-follows and Scott moved from Novice to Intermediate and then to Advanced throughout the course of the two day event. Not one session was missed so everyone got what they paid for….7 sessions in each class throughout both days. Nice!! Following the event, we jetted over to Casa Tejas in Homestead for some much needed beers and Mexican food. We got a chance to rehash the events of the weekend and talk about future plans. All in all it was a great yet exhausting weekend!! When the next events happen, I urge you to sign up and go play on the track. If I have forgotten anyone, its not intentional, its just old age. Thank you all for coming out and playing!!

Talked with Ducati Miami tech today, and he said she was doing okay, nothing too serious, but will have to confirm. She layed there, on the track, for, what, 5 minutes or more, not moving. Looked bad. She was riding fast too, quite well from what I saw; she's an experienced rider. Good write up, and thanks for your hard work. Next event, I hope to devote the whole day. (I'm going to call search and rescue for my muscles. I can't recall where I put them...) |
