| Restoring our reputation 1 TD noob at a time! | To those who have never done a trackday - come inside I wanted to take a couple minutes to ask a couple questions and see what your thoughts are. So why haven't you done a TD yet? These are some of the things I have been told, and my response to them. If I get to your question, please don't stop reading! Most common seems to be - "Well I really don't know..." or "I'm to young, I'm only [insert age here]" Fair enough, now I remember when I bought my 1st streetbike when I was 16. Ok, a '77 CB750 wouldn't be good to take to a track (LOL) obviously! My first 2 bikes were cruisers, but I bought my first sportbike when I was about to turn 18. An '87 CBR600 Hurricane. My only regret about this sport is that I didn't do my first TD before I even turned 18! In fact I waited about another 10 YEARS before doing one! WOW I REGRET THAT NOW! Don't be like me! Get out there (please keep reading!) "I don't want to get into racing" A trackday is not a race, it's not even a competitive event! Yea, people bring their ego's with them sometimes and can make some things competitive, but they do that just as much on the street! This is a MUCH safer enviroment - you read more below! "My bike isn't bike to be taking to the track" Well, if your bike isn't a cruiser then it's ok to take to the track! Yea obviously some bikes are better equiped than others and make things easier on the rider to learn. But not going because you have a Speed Triple and not a 600RR is NOT a reason! You will see guys out there on Standards and Touring bikes kicking some ass!!! "My bike isn't prepped for a TD - or - I don't know how to prep my bike" You would be surprised to know how simple bike prep can be! Some tracks require so little that all you need is some TAPE! We can help you! "I don't have any gear" Well you guys/gals are in luck. Many organizers understand that gear can be the biggest financial hit on doing a TD. So many now set up gear rentals! This is awesome, and even if you have the money it allows you to try on some sets for a weekend to see what you like. "I don't know where the tracks are" Luckily many of us do! That is the one good thing about Florida, we get to ride YEAR ROUND! And we have (4) tracks in our state. The bad is that our state is so big that some are quite far lol. Tracks: Homestead Speedway, Daytona Speedway, Palm Beach Raceway, Jennings GP. "Riding on the track isn't safe" Actually, riding on the track is safer than the street! Think about it. Yes you are traveling at excessive speeds. But everyone is going in the same direction, no dogs, kids, cars, poles, COPS, traffic lights, etc........................................... And you probably aren't going faster than some of you do on the street (unfortunately) lol and all with a TRAINED medical staff on stand by just waiting in case you need them! They are on the move the SECOND something happens! "It's intimidating" Very fair, I know I was! Probably one of the reasons it took me so long! This is VERY understandable! And the best answer to this is that so many of us have been doing them for a while! Team up with a guy or group that goes often. They would be happy to help you out! This is excellent for a first timer. It eliminates A LOT of the stress and anxiety about a first trackday and allows you to focus on more important things! I know I have brought 30+++ first timers with me to Jennings now and all but ONE have been back since and LOVE IT! Many from this site! "I don't want to be the slow one out there" First of all, if you're near me you hear me preaching that TD's aren't about speed. They are about becoming comfortable at a given pace. Now, remember there will ALWAYS be someone faster and someone slower! period! I've ridden with girls on pit bikes, guys on 150cc motards, guys that have never even RIDDEN A STREET BIKE BEFORE! The CR's (Control Riders) had to teach him how to shift! NO EXCUSE! "What's the point if you don't race" Trackdays are for fun! And damn are they a BLAST!!! They teach you control, they allow you to truly understand your motorcycle and how to become comfortable on it. Trackdays provide you insight to your bike that you NEVER thought was there! Also will make you so sore that you won't be able to walk! LOL "I've been riding on the street for xxx years and I'm plenty comfortable and just fine with that" Ok, if you're fine with that so be it. But I can promise you that you come out to a trackday and you WILL learn more than you thought possible! I considered myself a 'good' rider before doing trackdays, and I still say that I was, but WOW have I learned so much since doing TD's! WOW! I understand so much more now, I thought I knew bikes well! HA! Yea, so I thought! lol "Money - I don't have it!" Probably the most understandable reason! But make sure you know what it costs before you just write it off! Gear Rentals can be as cheap as $90 a day! Bike prep can cost you nothing! Depending on your relation to the track of choice consider hotel, food, drink, and gas. Some tracks may be close to home to eliminate gas and hotel or allow camping out. Basically my point is, don't make an excuse not to try it! Give it a chance! Did you have a reason I did post, please post it! TD's are a side of this sport that EVERYONE should experience. It'll change your outlook on our sport and on riding in general. I could go on and on, but you'll stop reading if I do... Please for your own sake, find a friend that has done some TD's (or make a new one!) and give it a try. I promise you won't regret it! Well except that you won't be able to stop doing them. If you have ANY questions please post them up! Questions? |
