![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Tell me what I am doing/did wrong. Okay, so I thought I knew how to tell a lean limit on a motorcycle, but I guess I don't. On my way home from a ride I took a corner in my neighborhood pretty quick because it's fun. Only this time I hit a peg and slid the back tire, (low side) I saved it by just luck I guess, I don't even remember what I did. Anyway WTF? First I thought my knee would hit before any hard parts, this must mean that my posture is crap I guess. Second, my tire looks like it still has a small smidgen of tire that could of been used in my opinion. I'm a self learned rider and this incident obviously shows that I am doing something wrong. I guess what I am asking is how do you guys tell the limit of a lean? |

It looks to me that the I should of had more tire to use. If you look at the top of the tire you can see where it slid. |

![]() | Re: Tell me what I am doing/did wrong. Sounds like cold tire and, as you mentioned, body position issues. Other contributing factors can be too early of a turn point, throttle control, stiff arming the bars, and adding lean angle and throttle at the same time. Regarding the cold tire, the round profile of motorcycle tires means that the edges of the tire can be cold even when you've been riding for a while. When the round tire comes into contact with the pavement, tire flattens. This is called deformation. The deformation of the tire moves the plies inside the tire. Their friction generates the heat that warms the tire. The warming effect is local to the deformation. In other words, riding on the center to middle of the tire only warms the center to the middle of the tire. Hard braking and acceleration in a straight line only warms the center of the tire. To warm the edges you have to go around several corners at gradually increasing lean angles. Weaving, flicking the bike left and right, does not deform the tire long enough to generate heat. Only going around corners, the longer the better will generate heat at the edges of your tires. So, you were riding around normally and then got to one corner and hit for everything it was worth but the edge of the tire wasn't warm so you got a cold tire slide. And that's what your picture shows. |

You should also consider sand on the road, painted line, etc. Unless your tires are properly heated a lean that will drag foot pegs is plenty enough to put you on your head. Another thing to think about is how your foot peg went down. There is the chance that when your peg touched it unweighted the back of the back and let the rear tire step out. If you weren't trying to drag anything and you still managed to get your foot peg I would imagine your body position needs some work. |
