Bike down on Davie at I-95

Rider OK but pissed - wear your gear!

If you heard about a bike down on Davie just east of I-95 at 5PM today - that was me.

Had a 66 year-old in a Miata decide to make a U-turn while someone was making a right on red from the side street into the same lane - so she just stopped across both westbound lanes. No place to put it, so hit the rear brake and squeezed the front HARD - went from 40 to probably less than 10 at impact. Hit her just behind her right front wheel - flipped over the hood, hit the pavement and rolled wearing mesh jacket, helmet and gloves - not a scratch.

1. Rider training works - DID NOT lay the bike down (did not want to hit her side door broadside), just rolled as I hit. I had started slowing as soon as I saw the car on the side street making the right on red - probably saved my ass.

2. Wear the gear! - no rash, just a couple of smudges on the jacket - but the back of my helmet has blue paint (from my front fairing - her car is green) on it. That would have hurt. I will have some bruises on the hips, but if 230lbs of Polack hit you at 10MPH, you'd be bruised too.

3. Bystanders were great - thanks to all, including a cruiser rider. They called the police, kept me from getting up (the ambulance was there in 4 min, did not have to make the trip to the hospital). Gave their stories to the FLPD - she's cited for improper U-turn, saving me my insurance deductable.

Now I'm just PISSED - can't ride until the bike gets fixed (I have full insurance, so time is the limiting factor)

Keep your heads up and ride safe!

Good to hear everything is OK.

Her insurance should pay for everything!

Ouch... very glad to hear your OK! Sounds like it could have been alot worse and you handled the situation well. Good luck getting her back together and glad again you were not hurt!

Man what is it today with idiots doing u-turns?? I swear... me and 7 other people met at Nicos house and then we all rode together down to Hooters tonight. Going down Pembroke Rd, 9 bikes in our group, and this idiot decides to start doing a u-turn right in front of us, then he sees us and just stops halfway through. I honestly do NOT know how we all managed to get around that without somebody going down. Hell one guy even had to swerve to the left and into oncoming traffic lanes (divided road) to avoid plowing straight into the damn car! Luckily he had enough time to look and see nobody was coming before swerving. It was waaaaay too close for comfort!! Still trying to figure out just how you can miss 9 headlights coming at you 10 feet away

I think it's time to start carrying a fukkin machine gun around with me and just blast these stupid people away... I mean seariously, WTF??
