It's much more common knowledge in the dirtbike community, because of the environment in which they operate. Dirt bike guys are also much more likely to share info - dirt riders help each other out anytime they get together, even if they're competitors; most street-only guys don't get exposed to that generally as much since the street community is not as tight as the off-road/MX is.

You can also cut a piece of plastic from a gallon milk container... almost identical. Just be sure the edges are smooth, or you'll cause more problems than you fix.
