Re: Pre gen ninja. Carb/running issues.

Well now the bike (at half choke) runs well. It does not hang when I give it throttle. I can play with the little throttle adjustment without it dying. I ran it through the gears on a stand and it seems hopeful. I also turned in the idle mixture screw so it is officially 2.5 turns out. I have only ridden 1st gear around the block but it seems to be fine. To recap:

K&N pod filter
#40 pilots
#110 mains
Cleaned the crab out of every hole, passage and crevice
Added seafoam to the fuel to give me some extra cleaning action
2.5 turns out idle mixture screw

Looks like it was just gunk in the carb making it act up. Seems very obvious but not. I'm hoping also the more I run fuel through it the better it will perform as it cleans itself out. I bought this bike from the back of a shed in north miami so everything needs to be gone over.

Now to fix the long list of other "adventure's" : Throttle adjustment (is very sticky), new locations for everything in the back end, figure out something for fairings, Adjust and lube clutch lever, make a mud guard for my new battery location. Make a better fuel filter. And probably a new chain. Oh I should also sync the carbs too...

Re: Pre gen ninja. Carb/running issues.

Check all the filters (including fuel) and rubber parts. Depending how long it sat, they may have deteriorated... this INCLUDES the tires... look for dry rot or cracking. Not likely unless it sat, exposed for years, but check anyhow. Not many things will fuck up your day more than a blowout at speed...

That, plus tires are the cheapest way to increase performance drastically.

Yes that is on the list too. One thing at a time for now. The tires aren't dry rotting but they are definitely original. I think the odometer had about 6xxx miles before I replaced it, and the bike is an 05.

Re: Pre gen ninja. Carb/running issues.

Low mileage bikes are often the ones most in need of work, since, when they just "sit", they're not getting routine maintenance.

Re: Pre gen ninja. Carb/running issues.

Yeah. This bike was in a bad from end collision and it has a COD. I payed a couple bucks for it, so it will only be a track toy. The time and effort I've been putting into it though is more than I thought. It will be worth it in the end. I hope :).

Re: Pre gen ninja. Carb/running issues.

But you're learning about the bike - always valuable knowledge. Next time my dirt bike needs carb work, I can call you ;)

Re: Pre gen ninja. Carb/running issues.

It shows how important it is to keep the carb clean and take care of the injection system. Saves a lot of headache in the long run.
