| Custom User Title!!...how much is that mod? | Help Installing SS Brake Lines Hey SoFla...I recently aquired a set of Galfer SS front brake lines for my 05 R1. I've read a couple how to's, and feel relatively comfortable with the install. Since its my first time, i'd really appreciate the guidance of someone who has done this before. I don't see any good group rides for this weekend, so if anyone wants to help out. I'd be more than willing to get enough beer to make it worth their while. Let me know if you can help. I appreciate it. |

Remove bottom banjo bolt on the caliper and drain fluid into container. Repeat for other side Remove top banjo bolt on the master cylinder. Remove hoses Install new hoses with new washers. If you have 2 hoses on one bolt you will need 3 washers. Tighten bolts. Caution: Bolts are hollow and break easy. Fill up master cylinder reservoir. Place hose on one caliper bleeder and open bleeded. Sometimes the fluid will come out but that takes time. Using a mini vac helps. On some bikes with the bleeder closed pump the brake lever slightly and the air bubles will come out into the reservoir. Another way to bleed the brakes is to squeeze the lever and open the bleed valve. Close bleed valve and release the lever. Repeat until the brake lever is firm. Check the level often as it will drop and introduce air in the system making your life miserable. Once the brake lever is firm, remove the master cylinder from the handlebar. Hold cylinder horizontal and slowly squeeze the lever (you may have to angle the cylinder until the bubble makes its way through the small hole in the master cylinder). You will get a small bubble into the reservoir. This bubble is imposible to remove from the reservoir any other way and that includes the master cylinder bleeded. Check for leaks Reinstall cylinder and have a beer.

Scudman - Thanks, just having trouble locating the proper place to remove the lines from the master cylinder. I'm going to go back out and give it another look. I sent you a PM. |

This also works for the caliper banjo bolts. (Banjo bolts look like any other bolt but are drilled through the bolt shank and alow fluid to go through the bolt.) If you follow the brake line from the master cylinder it joins 2 other lines at a block. This block needs to be removed along with the other 2 lines that go to the calipers. The new SS lines go directly from the master cylinder (there will be 2 lines with 3 washers, one washer between the 2 lines) to the calipers. Hope this helps. My favorite brake fluid is the Valvoline full synthetic Dot4 (eats paint like any other alcohol based fluid.). Any Auto store should have it

I have read several horror stories of guys over tightening the bolts and busting the banjos. Other than that, the directions above look good. Just take your time. Dont forget to bleed the brakes.

| Custom User Title!!...how much is that mod? | Re: Help Installing SS Brake Lines Cool, great advice so far. Got the old lines out yesterday, it was a bit of a hastle as they were connected to a mounting assembly holding the horn. I stopped at the point where I am to mount the new lines. I noticed that one end of each line was bent, and the other was straight. I'm guessing the straight end goes to the caliper, and the bent end is attached to the master cylinder. After that, I am supposed to bleed the lines, I've heard about a tool that helps bleed them much quicker than the hand pump method, a part from autozone or advanced auto parts. Should I get that? |
